Welcome to all India Company Marines and their families.

The Old Salts

At 0902 hours on March 8, 1965 Marines from India Company 3rd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment came ashore at Da Nang Bay in the Republic of Vietnam as part of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade. For the next 4 ˝ years, Marines assigned to this Company would sweep through the I Corps Sector of Vietnam from Da Nang to the DMZ engaging and inflicting devastating losses on units of the Army of North Vietnam time and time again. Unit awards ranged from the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Unit Commendations and Navy Unit Commendations, to Presidential Unit Citations (Both Army and Navy). Individual awards for valor ran the full range, from Navy Achievement Medals all the way up to the Medal of Honor (2).

More than 20 years after India Company left Vietnam an aggressive effort was made to reunite the members of one of the most decorated units to serve in that conflict… “The Flaming I” – India 3/9. The first reunion was held in 1989, when 10 members of the Company met in Washington, D.C. Since then, reunions have been held every two years at various locations around the country and the unit roster now numbers over 250. The official newsletter of the “Flaming I” is “Comwire”, which is published 4 times a year. Former Gulf War I 3/9 Marines Sgt Rock and Troll have carried the “Comwire” out of the dark ages and into the 21st Century by posting it to their awesome website. To them we say, “Thank You Brothers”.

The 3rd Battalion of the 9th Marine Regiment was formed at Camp Elliott, San Diego, CA on February 12, 1942. Those Marines went on to fight on Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. A quarter century later the next generation of Marines carried the guidon throughout Vietnam from Da Nang to Khe Sahn. And 20 years after that the 3rd generation of I 3/9ers would spearhead the drive into Kuwait.

In 1994 our proud guidon was furled for the last time…maybe. It may be gone but never forgotten as we, the former Marines of “I” Company 3rd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment, will carry what it stood for to our graves. “Once A Marine, Always A Marine”.
